What the key is for

A plain button lets anyone inside open the door. The key lets you take that away. A stock room or server room can be left secure out of hours.

It is a management control rather than a convenience. Decide who holds the key before you fit it.

Where an exit button with key belongs

Stock rooms, server rooms, plant rooms and warehouse offices. Doors where the people inside are staff, not the public.

It also suits a shared corridor door that should only release during working hours. Turn it on in the morning and off at night.

Never fit an exit button with key on a fire exit

This is the one rule that matters. A release that can be switched off is not an escape route device.

Any door people must be able to leave through needs a plain exit button and a break glass unit. Ask us if you are unsure which door is which.

Zinc alloy or stainless steel

Zinc alloy is die cast, so it feels solid and takes a plated finish well. Stainless steel handles damp and coastal air better.

Both do the same electrical job. The choice is about the setting and the look.

What does the key actually do?
On most units it switches the button on and off. Send us a photo and we will confirm how yours is set up.

Can I fit it on a fire exit?
No. Use a plain exit button there. A release that can be locked out is not acceptable on an escape route.

How many keys come with it?
Usually two. Order a spare if more than one person needs access.

Is it wired like a normal exit button?
Yes. The same dry contacts, with the key in the same circuit.
