Underground motors need their foundation box cast into concrete before the driveway surface is finished, so that decision has to be made early. Hydraulic motors cost more but suit gates cycling constantly through a working day. Same number, different weight, why BFT model codes trip people up

The number after the A in a BFT swing gate motor code does not mean the same thing across product families, and this catches more buyers than any other spec on this page.

• ATHOS AC A25 covers 700 kg. KUSTOS BT A25 and PHOBOS AC A25 both cover 400 kg.
• PHOBOS BT A40 covers 500 kg. PHOBOS BT B40 covers 700 kg, and BFT does not publicly explain what the letter B means against A.
• BFT VIRGO (250 kg, 2.5 m, 40W) actually outperforms VIRGO SMART BT A20 (200 kg, 2 m, 110W) on every mechanical figure, despite the plainer name.

Always confirm by the full model name and, where you’re replacing an existing unit, by the reference code on the rating plate, never by the number alone.

Single motor or twin kit, what changes the price for the same model

ATHOS, KUSTOS and PHOBOS all sell in two formats. A twin kit includes two motors, the control board, photocells, a flashing light, remotes, a push button and fixing brackets, everything to commission a new double leaf gate. A single motor listing, such as ATHOS AC A40 AL or KUSTOS BT A40, is one operator only, for replacing a failed unit where the board and accessories already work.

AC or BT, and how that choice plays out across the BFT swing range

AC is a 230V mains motor with no battery option. BT is a 24V motor built to accept battery backup, so the gate can still open during a power cut, and it generally runs cooler under frequent cycling. This split appears throughout ATHOS, KUSTOS, PHOBOS and the underground ELI range, and it is worth comparing directly, for example between PHOBOS AC A25 and KUSTOS BT A25 at the identical 400 kg rating.

• Extra remote handsets beyond the two supplied in a kit
• Electric locks, required on some underground and long leaf models past a published length
• Concrete foundation, conduit and mains supply to the operator

Protection ratings vary across this range, from IPX4, splash only with no stated dust rating on several PHOBOS variants, through IP44 on ATHOS and KUSTOS, up to IP67 on the underground ELI range.
