Description

The BFT Compacta A20 is a photocell pair, one transmitter and one receiver, with a 20 metre nominal range and 180 degree horizontal adjustment, 90 degrees each side. It stops a sliding gate, swing gate or barrier closing on anything crossing the beam.

The 180 in the name is the adjustment angle, not a second range figure or a different model. A related BFT DESME A15 exists at a similar price with a shorter range, so match the figure to your gate width, not the name.

BFT gate photocell alignment: the real reason photocells fail

Photocells rarely fail electrically. They fail because the beam stops lining up. A post that has shifted, dust or a spider’s web on the lens, or direct low sun hitting the receiver at certain times of day can all block or confuse the beam, and the gate either will not close or reverses for no visible reason.

We align both units properly at commissioning and check the mounting height matches on both posts, since even a few centimetres of difference weakens the beam. If your gate already has photocells that stopped working suddenly, check the lens for dust before assuming the unit has failed.

Dual voltage input, why that matters when wiring to a BFT board

Accepting either AC or DC power means this photocell wires directly into most BFT control boards, ALENA SW2, THALIA and HAMAL alike, without a separate power adaptor between the board and the sensor. That is one less part to fail and one less wire run to plan on installation day.

Fitting photocells outdoors in Oman

With no published IP rating, we treat the housing seal as our own responsibility rather than a stated spec. Coastal sites in Sohar, Sur and Salalah put salt into any gap in the housing over time, and inland at Nizwa and Duqm blown dust settles on the lens faster than most owners expect. We seal the cable entry properly and show customers how to wipe the lenses periodically, since that single habit prevents most call outs.

Direct sun is worth planning around too. Mounting the receiver facing east or west can catch low morning or evening sun straight into the lens, which can stop the beam registering correctly at certain times of day even with clean, aligned units.

What does the 180 mean in BFT Compacta A20-180?

It is the horizontal adjustment angle, 90 degrees each side, not a second range figure. The range itself is 20 metres.

My gate reverses for no reason. Is it the photocell?

Very often, yes, but usually alignment or a dirty lens rather than a failed unit. Check both posts are level and the lenses are clean before replacing anything.

Does this photocell work with any BFT control board?

It accepts 12 to 33 Vac or 15 to 35 Vdc, which covers most BFT boards including ALENA SW2, THALIA and HAMAL, without a separate adaptor.
