A magnetic system senses position directly through a sensor, a work time system estimates position from elapsed running time, and this cam and spring assembly senses position mechanically, through physical contact with an adjustable stopper. Each has a different failure mode, and this one typically fails from the spring losing tension or the contact points wearing after years of cycling, not from drift the way a timer based system does.

A gate that overruns its stop and strains against the end of travel, one that stops short and never reaches fully open or fully closed, or one where the stopping point has slowly drifted over months, all point to this part rather than the motor itself. A sudden total failure, where the gate no longer stops at all and keeps driving until something physically blocks it, is the more urgent version of the same fault and needs attention immediately, since a gate with no working limit switch is a genuine safety hazard, not just an inconvenience.

Once the new assembly is fitted, both stopper collars need setting from scratch, since the old positions do not carry over to a new part.
