The CAME FERNI FE40230, CAME code 001FE40230, is a 230V irreversible swing gate motor with a hinged transmission arm and an encoder, for leaves up to 4 metres long and 400 kg. The arm reaches a maximum C dimension of 380 mm. The motor draws 140 W, gives 540 N of thrust and opens to 90 degrees in 34 seconds.

Three points come first. We supply it as a single motor, so a double gate needs two. The thrust is modest for a 4 m leaf, so we check the weight and the wind load before we quote. And the arm comes as a left or right hand part, so we confirm which side suits your gate.

4 m leaves and 400 kg: is the CAME FERNI right for your gate

CAME rates the motor for a leaf up to 4 metres and 400 kg. Its limits table also appears to allow a heavier leaf if it is shorter. The table has no row labels, so we confirm the figure for your leaf before we quote.

We ask for the weight and the length of each leaf, and we allow for wind on solid sheet.

Hinged arm, 380 mm reach and the left or right hand arm

The motor pushes the leaf through a hinged transmission arm. CAME gives a maximum C dimension of 380 mm, which is the offset between the pillar face and the hinge line. A gate with a larger offset needs a different motor.

CAME lists the arm and track as accessories, in a right hand version (001FERNI-BDX) and a left hand version (001FERNI-BSX). We confirm which side each leaf needs, and whether the arm is in your price, before we order.

Send photos of both pillars with a tape across the offset and the depth, and we confirm the fit before you order.

140 W, 540 N and a 34 second opening

CAME lists 140 W and 1.2 A on a 230V, 50 or 60 Hz supply. The thrust is 540 N, and the opening time to 90 degrees is 34 seconds. The duty rating is 30%, so the motor can run about a third of the time, with rest between cycles. A slow, gentle gate is easier on the leaf and the arm, but it takes longer to clear the road.

Irreversible gearmotor and encoder on the FERNI

An irreversible gearmotor cannot be pushed back from outside, so the leaf stays shut when the motor stops. CAME fits an encoder, so the board knows where the leaf is, slows it near each end and reacts to an obstacle. CAME also tests the automation against European impact force standards.

A tall, solid or wind exposed leaf may still benefit from an electric lock, and CAME lists single and double cylinder locks and a remote release. In a power cut the leaf is released with the manual release, so keep the key where you can reach it.

CAME FERNI control boards and safety

CAME names two double leaf boards for this motor, and lists a third control panel in its kit. We choose one for your gate.

Photocells stop the gate closing on a car or a person, and a flashing lamp warns people before it moves. A safety edge is worth adding where a leaf closes toward a wall or a footpath.

CAME FERNI remotes: the TOP44RBN in CAME’s kit

CAME’s kit includes the 806TS-0270, which is the CAME TOP44RBN, a four channel rolling code remote on 433.92 MHz. A CAME receiver pairs only with CAME handsets, so Somfy, BFT and Nice remotes cannot pair with it. We programme the handsets to the board, and we can add more.

230V only: the CAME FERNI and power cuts

CAME lists this motor as a 230V gearmotor only. It runs on mains power, and a power cut leaves the leaf where it stopped, held by the irreversible gearmotor. We release it with the manual release and keep the key where you can reach it. If a battery backup matters to you, ask us, and we point you to a 24V swing motor.

IP44, wind and sand: the CAME FERNI in Oman

IP44 protects against solid objects and splashing water, and it is lower than IP54 on some other swing motors. The motor works from minus 20 to plus 55°C, and has thermal protection at 150°C. A 4 m solid leaf catches wind like a sail, and that load lands on the hinges, the arm and the pillar. We mount the motor clear of standing water and seal the cable entries. Coastal sites in Sohar, Sur and Salalah add salt, which attacks pivots first, so keep the hinges greased.
