The Somfy TaHoma Switch is a smart home hub that controls Somfy RTS and io homecontrol devices, and Zigbee 3.0 products, from one app. It also responds to two buttons on top of the unit and to Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Google Home. It sits indoors, plugs into a micro USB power supply and connects over Wi-Fi.

Two points come first. It controls Somfy and a list of partner brands, not BFT, Nice or Came gates. And Somfy RTS is a one way radio, so the app can send a command to a gate but cannot confirm the gate has moved.

What the Somfy TaHoma Switch controls: RTS, io and Zigbee

The hub speaks three radio languages at once, on 868 to 870 MHz and 433.42 MHz. That lets one app run Somfy gates, garage doors, shutters and lights that were installed years apart.

Somfy states that the hub works with its range of devices and a list of partner brands, including VELUX and Philips Hue. The device limits do not simply add up, so we plan the count with you before you buy.

Control a Somfy gate or garage door from your phone in Oman

The listing says the TaHoma Switch controls any Somfy RTS device, and it names gates and garage doors. It does not list motor models. Somfy RTS app control: what one way radio means for a gate

RTS sends a command and does not listen for a reply. When you press open in the TaHoma app, the hub sends the signal, but it cannot tell you whether the gate really opened. Somfy io homecontrol works both ways and can report a position, but gates and garage doors on RTS cannot.

Opening a gate from your phone also means you cannot see what is in the way. Keep the photocells fitted, and consider a camera if the gate faces a road. The TaHoma lets you add Somfy cameras, up to the listed limit.

Somfy smart home hub scenes, timers and voice control

The hub stores up to 40 scenes. A scene runs several devices at once, such as closing the gate, shutters and lights when you leave. You can start a scene from the app, with one of the two buttons on top of the unit or by voice.

• Timed events open or close a device at a set hour.
• “What If” scenarios react to a condition, such as a sensor.
• IFTTT can trigger actions from other services.
• Alexa, Google Assistant and Google Home can start scenes by voice.

Range, placement and heat for the Somfy TaHoma Switch in Oman

Somfy lists a range of 200 metres in open field and about 20 metres through two internal walls. Concrete and metal gates cut that further, so the hub should sit as close as possible to the devices it controls.

It is rated IP30 and for 0 to 50°C, indoors only. In Oman, place it in an air conditioned room, away from a sunny window, a hot roof space or any outdoor box. A hub left to bake in summer heat will fail early.
