What does a sliding gate limit switch do?

A sliding gate motor has no idea where the gate is. On a CAME motor with mechanical limits, two limit plates are fixed to the rack, one for the open position and one for the closed position. As the gate reaches each end, the plate pushes the lever of the limit switch group on the motor. The lever presses a switch, and the control board stops the motor.

If the limit switch fails, the board never gets the signal. The gate keeps pushing against the end stop, or the board stops it early because a switch is stuck. Either way, the gate does not stop where it should.

We isolate the power and release the motor so the gate moves by hand. We remove the motor cover and disconnect the old limit switch group, noting each wire. We fit the new 119RIY014, reconnect it to the board and check that the lever springs back freely. Then we check the limit plates on the rack, move them if needed, and run the gate through full open and close cycles until it stops at the same point each time.

We also check the rack, the pinion and the motor while the cover is off. A gate that rubs or binds makes the motor push harder, and a hard push wears the limit lever faster.
