Somfy screw drive swing gate motor: how it works

A screw drive motor turns a threaded shaft, and that shaft pushes or pulls the arm that swings the leaf. The thread is what makes the mechanism non reversing, so a closed leaf cannot be pushed open by hand without releasing the motor. That gives you resistance to forcing attempts and to strong wind, which Somfy lists as a feature of this model.

The magnetic end limit switch tells the motor where the leaf stops. It has no mechanical contact to wear, so it keeps its setting through years of cycles. Soft stop slows the leaf near the end of its travel, so it does not meet the post at full speed.

Somfy lists the installation as needing no special tools and no welding, and the fixing brackets are adjustable. That helps on a gate where the post and hinge positions are not perfectly square. We still check the pillar, the hinge line and the leaf before we fit, because an arm mounted motor needs enough clear depth for its travel. Send photos of both pillars with a tape measure across the depth.

Manual unlocking works from inside, so a leaf can be released and moved by hand during a power cut. Battery backup is not stated on the listing, so treat it as a mains gate until Somfy confirms otherwise.
