An indoor unit outdoors will fail

A standard break glass unit is an open plastic box with a switch inside. In an air conditioned corridor it lasts for years. Outside in Oman it does not.

Three things kill it. Fine dust works past the seam and sits on the contacts. Coastal humidity corrodes them. And direct sun cooks the housing past the temperature the plastic was rated for. The unit then fails silently. Nobody finds out until the day it is needed.

What the sealed version changes

The IP rated housing is gasketed and the entry points are glanded. Dust and water are kept out of the switch chamber rather than merely slowed down. The face is protected against ultraviolet so the legend stays readable.

This matters most on the gate line. A compound gate held by an electric lock still needs a way out on foot when the power or the controller has gone.

Cable and mounting

Run the cable in conduit right up to the gland. An unprotected tail is the weak point on every outdoor installation we are called back to. Mount at handle height on the escape side, where a person leaving will actually see it.

Wire it in series with the lock supply, normally closed, exactly as you would an indoor unit. Feed from a protected access control power supply and keep the enclosure indoors.

FAQ

Q: My unit is outside but under a canopy. Do I still need the sealed version? On a coastal site, yes. Rain is not the main problem in Oman. Airborne dust and salt laden humidity reach anything not sealed, canopy or no canopy. Inland and fully sheltered, a standard unit will usually survive, but it is the cheaper half of a two part decision.

Q: Will direct sun damage it? Sun degrades the housing and fades the legend long before it affects the switch. A UV stabilised face keeps the wording readable, which matters because a release nobody can identify is not a release. Where you can, mount on a north facing wall or under the gate pillar overhang.

Q: Can this release a gate motor as well as a lock? It switches a circuit, so it can do either, but they are different jobs. On a motorised gate the motor’s own manual release key frees the leaf. This unit is for the pedestrian gate or the lock beside it. Do not rely on one to do the other.

Q: What cable should I run to an outdoor unit? Use a suitably rated multicore in conduit, terminated at the gland rather than pushed through a drilled hole. Two cores are enough for a single pole. Leave a small drip loop below the entry so water tracking down the cable does not reach the terminal.
