Description

The BFT ECB D121018 is a vertical solenoid electric lock for swing gates, mounted at ground level with a bolt that extends upward into a socket under the gate leaf when locked. It runs on a simple 12 or 24V supply, no built in transformer needed the way our BFT EBP lock requires.

One gap matters more here than on almost anything else built on this site. No IP rating is confirmed, and a ground mounted lock sits exactly where rainwater collects against a gate post, lower than any electronic part we have covered so far.

BFT ECB or EBP, two different lock designs

If your gate motor’s board already supplies 24V to accessories, ECB wires in directly without needing its own transformer, a simpler installation than EBP in that respect. Confirm which design your gate’s existing lock housing was built for before replacing it with the other type.

Ground mounted gate lock Oman: why IP rating matters more here

A lock mounted on a post or at the control panel sits above most standing water. A vertical lock set into the ground, or into a socket cast at the base of the gate, sits exactly where flash rain pools, where a driveway slopes toward a low point, or where a garden hose regularly sprays during routine cleaning.

Without a confirmed IP rating, we treat the housing seal and the socket’s own drainage as our own responsibility. We check that the ground socket has somewhere for water to drain away rather than collect around the lock body, and we seal the cable entry carefully, since a solenoid lock that fills with water internally fails long before its mechanical parts wear out.

Which gates actually need a ground lock versus EBP

Both lock types solve the same underlying problem, a leaf long enough that the motor’s own holding force is not enough against wind and pressure once closed, the situation already explained on our PHOBOS BT B40 and ELI BT A40 pages. The choice between a ground mounted vertical lock and a panel mounted EBP style lock usually comes down to the gate’s existing hardware and what the pillar or threshold was built to accept, not a universal rule.

If you are retrofitting an existing gate, the ground socket or lack of one usually decides which type fits without extra civil work.

Wiring and timing an electric lock into an existing gate

Any electric lock ties into the control board timed so the bolt releases before the motor starts opening and re-engages after the gate closes fully. Getting that timing wrong either stalls the motor against a locked bolt or leaves the gate genuinely unlocked between cycles, which defeats the reason for fitting one. We set and test this under load at commissioning, with the gate actually moving through several full cycles, not on the bench.

Installing a ground socket for a vertical lock in Oman

If your gate has no existing ground socket, one needs forming in concrete, sloped slightly so water drains away from the lock rather than pooling against it. On a flat driveway with poor natural drainage, that slope is worth getting right the first time rather than discovering a flooded socket after the first heavy rain in Sohar, Salalah or Muscat during the monsoon affected months in the south.

What is the difference between ECB and EBP locks?

ECB is a vertical ground mounted lock on 12 or 24V direct. EBP runs on 230V through a built in transformer. The gate’s existing hardware usually decides which fits without extra work.

Is the ECB lock rated for outdoor ground mounting?

IP rating is not confirmed by the manufacturer’s listing, so we treat drainage and the housing seal as our own responsibility when fitting it.
