Description
The CAME DIR10 is a pair of infrared safety photocells with a range of 10 metres: one transmitter and one receiver, fixed facing each other across your gateway. When a car, a person or a pet breaks the invisible beam while the gate is closing, the photocells tell the control board, and the gate stops or opens again.
They run on 12 or 24V AC/DC, are rated IP54, and need no alignment. They are the simplest way to make an automatic gate, garage door or barrier safe.
Why every automatic gate needs gate safety photocells
A gate motor is strong enough to push a heavy gate, and strong enough to damage a car or injure a child. The motor cannot see what is in the gateway. The photocells are its eyes.
| Without photocells | With the CAME DIR10 |
|---|---|
| The gate closes on whatever is in the way | The gate stops or opens again when the beam is broken |
| Automatic closing is a risk | Automatic closing becomes safe to use |
| Cars get scratched or dented | Cars in the gateway are protected |
| Children and pets are at risk | The beam guards the full width of the opening |
If your gate closes by itself after a set time, photocells are not optional. They are what stops it closing on someone who is still in the way.

DIR10, DIR20 or DIR30: choosing the range
CAME makes the DIR in three ranges. The range is the furthest distance between the transmitter and the receiver.
| Model | Range | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| CAME DIR10 | 10 m | Villa gates, garage doors and most driveways |
| CAME DIR20 | 20 m | Wide commercial gates |
| CAME DIR30 | 30 m | Very wide industrial openings |
For a normal villa gate up to 10 m wide, the DIR10 is the right choice. Measure from pillar to pillar where the photocells will sit.
CAME photocells Oman: which boards and gates they work with
The DIR10 works with CAME control boards for sliding gates, swing gates, garage doors and barriers. CAME shows three ways to connect it:
- Reopening while closing: one pair. If the beam is broken while the gate closes, the gate opens again. This is the usual setting.
- Two pairs, one for reopening and one for partial stop: useful on a sliding gate, where a second pair guards the area the gate moves into.
- Two pairs, both for reopening: for a deep driveway or a wide swing gate, with one pair outside and one inside.
The DIR10 runs on 12 or 24V AC/DC and switches a relay rated 500 mA at 24V. Many boards from other brands can power it and read its contact too. Send us a photo of your board and we check before you buy. See our CAME sliding gate motors, CAME swing gate motors and gate barriers.
Infrared gate sensor: how the DIR10 works
The transmitter sends an invisible infrared beam to the receiver across the gateway. While the receiver sees the beam, the gate runs normally. When something breaks the beam, the receiver switches its relay, and the control board stops the gate or opens it again, depending on how it is wired.
The DIR10 needs no alignment. Once the two units face each other across the opening, they find each other. That saves time on site and keeps the pair working if a pillar moves slightly over the years.
Photocell installation Muscat: how we fit the DIR10
CAME advises fixing the photocells about 50 cm above the ground, facing each other. That height catches a car bumper, a child and most pets. We fit them in this order:
- We choose the position on each pillar, inside the line of the gate, so the gate itself never breaks the beam.
- We fix each unit on the surface of the pillar, or recess it into the pillar with the base supplied.
- We run the cable back to the control board in conduit, so it is safe from the sun and from strimmers.
- We set the board for reopening while closing, then test by breaking the beam while the gate closes.
On a sliding gate, we often add a second pair to guard the area the gate slides into.
Sun, dust and ants: photocells in Oman
| Problem | What helps |
|---|---|
| Dust on the cover | Wipe both covers with a soft cloth every month |
| Low sun shining straight into the receiver | Where possible, fit the receiver so it does not face the sunrise or sunset |
| Ants nesting inside the unit | Check inside the covers at every service |
| Cable cooked by the sun | Run all cable in conduit |
Test your photocells once a month: wave a hand or a box through the beam while the gate closes. If the gate does not stop or open again, call us.
