Somfy Ixengo 230V or 24V: choosing the supply

The 230V models run straight from mains. The 24V Ixengo L runs a 24V DC motor fed from a 230V supply, and it brings three advantages. It fits posts as narrow as 80 mm, it closes softly, and it publishes its 465 mm stroke, so we can check your pillar depth against a real number.

The 24V version gives up some remote memory, with 40 channels against 128 on the JL and JS, and its protection rating is IP44 against IP54. If your posts are wide and many people use the gate, the 230V versions are the better value.

Somfy RTS remotes: why they do not pair with BFT or Nice

Every Somfy swing gate motor on this page speaks Somfy RTS at 433.42 MHz. Each brand codes its radio differently, so a BFT, Nice or Came handset cannot pair with a Somfy receiver, whatever the frequency looks like on the label. Somfy RTS also differs from Somfy io homecontrol, which runs on 868 to 870 MHz, so the two never mix.

If you already own handsets from another brand, plan to buy Somfy RTS handsets with the motor. The same RTS family runs our Somfy sliding gate motors, so a site with both a swing and a sliding gate can share handsets.

Pillar depth, stroke and opening angle for Somfy swing gate motors

An arm mounted motor needs clear depth from the hinge to the inside face of the pillar, so the arm can travel through its stroke. Too little depth limits how far the leaf opens or forces an awkward bracket position.

The Ixengo L 24V publishes a 465 mm stroke and a 90 degree maximum opening. The Ixengo JS also publishes a 90 degree opening. Some other listings in the range leave the stroke and the angle unpublished, so we measure your pillars before we quote. Send photos of both pillars with a tape across the depth.

Light duty or heavy use: how often does your gate run

Capacity is only half the question, because a gate that opens all day wears a motor faster than one that opens twice. The Ixengo JS is listed as semi intensive duty, and the Ixengo L 3S is rated for up to 60 openings and closings a day. The listings for the JL and the L 24V do not state a duty rating, so we confirm with Somfy before we place either on a gate with heavy traffic.

Somfy swing gate motors against BFT: where each one wins

The closest like for like comparison is the BFT ATHOS AC A40 swing gate motor. It is a 230V twin kit listed for 400 kg and 4 m per leaf with IP54 protection, at the same OMR 212.000 as the Ixengo JL.

At that weight the two are close on paper. The difference is the radio. Somfy uses RTS at 433.42 MHz and BFT uses Mitto at 433.92 MHz, so choose the family that matches any handsets or accessories you already own. If you have neither, the decision comes down to the spec that matters most to you, such as the 24V narrow post option on the Somfy side.

Heat, wind and salt on Somfy swing gate motors in Oman

Swing leaves catch wind like a sail, and the load lands on the hinges and the post. A solid sheet leaf is the hardest case, and a slatted or open leaf is easier. The Ixengo range is rated at IP44 or IP54, which covers splashing but not standing water, so we mount each motor clear of pooling.

Coastal sites in Sohar, Sur and Salalah add salt, which attacks pivots first. We use stainless fixings where we can and we leave the manual release reachable, so the gate can be opened by hand in a power cut.
