Description

The CAME SMA (code CAME 009SMA) is a single channel loop detector at 24V AC/DC: a magnetic loop detector that senses the metal of a car or truck over a wire loop cut into the road. As a vehicle loop detector, it tells a barrier or gate that a vehicle is there, so the boom or gate does not close on it, or opens automatically as the vehicle arrives.

CAME describes this single channel loop detector as a magnetic sensor for detecting metal masses. It sits inside the control cabinet, rated IP20, and works from minus 20 to plus 55°C.

What does a vehicle loop detector do?

A vehicle loop detector has two parts: a loop of cable laid in a slot cut into the road surface, and the detector in the cabinet. The detector keeps a small current running through the loop. When a car stops or drives over it, the metal changes the loop, and the detector switches its output.

Photocells see across the gateway at one height. A magnetic loop detector sees the whole vehicle, even a low sports car or a high truck body, which is why barriers almost always have one.

The four frequency settings of the CAME 009SMA matter on sites with more than one loop, such as an entry lane and an exit lane side by side. Each detector is set to a different frequency so the loops do not upset each other.

Single channel loop detector or two channels: SMA or SMA2

CAME makes the detector in two versions. The CAME SMA is a single channel loop detector that reads one loop. The SMA2 reads two loops from one unit.

For a single barrier with one safety loop, the single channel loop detector is all you need. Where one barrier needs both a safety loop and a free exit loop, ask us about the SMA2 or a second SMA.

Magnetic loop detector: how the road loop is laid

The detector is only as good as the loop. CAME’s manual limits the size of the loop, its area times the number of turns, and gives slot depths of about 30 to 50 mm depending on the number of turns. We follow those rules on every job:

• We mark the loop in the lane, clear of drains, manholes and the gate itself.
• We saw cut the slot in the asphalt or concrete, and clean it out.
• We lay the loop cable in the slot with the turns CAME gives for its size.
• We twist the feeder cable from the loop to the cabinet and keep it short, because sensitivity falls on a long feeder.
• We seal the slot with a road sealant made for heat and traffic.
• We set the frequency and sensitivity on the magnetic loop detector, then test with a small car and a large vehicle.

The vehicle loop detector on Oman roads

Road loops in Oman face sun hot enough to soften asphalt, and interlock paving on many villa and compound driveways.

A loop that fails is usually a cable cut by later road work or a slot whose sealant has lifted. The vehicle loop detector re-learns its loop automatically when conditions change, but a broken cable must be relaid.
