Description

The CAME SMA2 (code CAME 009SMA2) is a dual channel loop detector at 24V AC/DC: one unit that reads two separate loops cut into the road. As a barrier loop detector, it can watch a safety and exit loop at the same time, holding the boom up while a vehicle is under it and opening the barrier as a car arrives to leave.

CAME describes the SMA2 as a double channel magnetic sensor for detecting metal masses. It fits inside the control cabinet, rated IP20, and works from minus 20 to plus 55°C.

Why choose a dual channel loop detector?

Most barriers need more than one loop. One loop under the boom keeps it from closing on a car. A second loop before the barrier on the inside opens it automatically for vehicles leaving. A dual channel loop detector handles both from one unit, in one slot in the cabinet.

As a barrier loop detector, the SMA2 also makes service simpler: one unit, one set of settings and one place to check when a barrier misbehaves. For a site manager, having the safety and exit loop on one detector means the exit works the same way every day, and the safety loop is never forgotten. On the CAME 009SMA2, each loop is set up on its own, so a large exit loop and a smaller safety loop can each be tuned to suit its size and the vehicles that cross it.

Safety and exit loop: how a two loop barrier works

A barrier with a safety and exit loop is the most common layout we fit at compounds and car parks:

• Exit loop: laid in the lane on the inside, before the barrier. A car leaving drives onto it, and the barrier opens without a remote or a card.
• Safety loop: laid under the boom. While a car is on it, the boom stays up, whatever the timer or remote says.
• Closing: once the car leaves the safety loop, the board lowers the boom behind it.

Entry is usually by remote, card or keypad, and the same safety loop protects cars coming in. With one CAME SMA2, both loops run from one detector.

Barrier loop detector: how the loops are laid

CAME’s manual limits the size of each loop, its area times the number of turns, and gives slot depths of about 30 to 50 mm depending on the number of turns. On every barrier loop detector job we:

• Mark both loops in the lane, with a clear gap between them so they do not overlap.
• Saw cut the slots in the asphalt or concrete, clear of drains, manholes and steel.
• Lay each loop with the turns CAME gives for its size.
• Twist each feeder cable and keep it short, back to the cabinet.
• Seal the slots with a road sealant made for heat and traffic.
• Set each channel’s frequency and sensitivity, then test with a small car and a large vehicle.

If one loop fails, usually because later road work has cut the cable, the other channel keeps working until we relay it.
