Reflective photocell or a transmitter and receiver pair

A pair of photocells puts a transmitter on one post and a receiver on the other. A reflective photocell puts a single unit on one side and a reflector, a small mirror like plate, on the other. The unit sends a beam out and reads it coming back.

The Reflex suits an opening where running cable across to the other side is awkward, or where the conditions are harsh. For a standard villa gate, our Somfy Master Pro Bitech photocell is cheaper and usually enough.

Somfy 12 m photocell: what the detection range means

Somfy lists a detection range of 12 metres in open areas. That is the distance the beam can travel between the sensor and the reflector in clear conditions. Dust, heavy rain or strong sun reduce it, so we aim to keep the reflector well inside the limit.

For most driveways, 12 metres is generous. It suits a wide gate, a car park entrance or a barrier lane. We measure the opening and tell you if the sensor reaches comfortably.

IP67 and minus 25 to plus 60°C: a photocell for harsh Omani sites

IP67 means the sensor is sealed against dust and can survive temporary immersion. That matters at a coastal site, near a gate that is hosed down, or where sand is constant. The listed temperature range runs from minus 25 to plus 60°C, which covers the heat of an Omani summer in direct sun.

Even so, strong low sun can dazzle a photocell at certain times of day. We choose the mounting side so the sensor does not face the setting sun, and we show you how to wipe the lens and the reflector clear of sand.

24 V supply, contact type and the signal test output

The sensor runs on 24 V AC or DC, rated for a 3 A load, with protection class II, which means double insulation. Most Somfy control boards supply 24 V to accessories, but we check yours.

The listing’s “NF” and “NO or NC” wording is unclear, so we confirm the output on the unit itself. A wrong connection leaves the safety input open while the gate still moves.

The photocell links to the safety input on the control board, which sits beside mains parts. Our engineers fit the sensor and the reflector, align the beam, wire the contact correctly and test that the gate stops and reverses when the beam is broken. The sensor measures 68 x 25 x 81 mm, which is compact enough for a slim pillar.
