No slowdown on the BFT Deimos AC A800, and why that matters on an 800 kg gate

This motor has no soft stop. BFT lists the slowdown function on the Deimos AC A800 as not fitted, which means an 800 kg gate reaches its end stops at full speed on every open and every close, several times a day, for years.

That load goes somewhere. It goes into the wheels, the track, the end stops and the gate frame itself, and it is the reason heavy gates on non slowdown operators develop track wear and rattling stops long before the motor gives any trouble. It is also loud, which matters on a villa gate beside a bedroom window.

None of this makes it a bad motor at the right price on the right gate. It does mean you should fit good rubber buffered stops and check the track alignment properly at installation, and it is the first reason to look at the comparison further down this page before deciding.

The BFT Deimos AC A800 is a 230V motor, so battery backup is not an option

The AC in the model name is the most important part of it. This is a 230V mains motor. Every BT model in the BFT range, including the Deimos BT and the whole Ares family, runs a 24V motor from a 230V board, and that is what allows backup batteries to be fitted.

On this motor they cannot be. Not now, not as an upgrade later. When the power drops, the gate stops where it is and somebody walks out with the release key. On a compound entrance or a business gate where a power cut at the wrong moment means vehicles queued in the road, that is the deciding specification.

If you never need the gate to move without mains power, this is a saving rather than a problem. Decide it deliberately rather than discovering it in July.

Semi intensive duty, matching the BFT Deimos AC A800 to your traffic

BFT rates this motor for semi intensive use. The Ares range and the Deimos BT range are rated intensive. That is one step down, and this is the heaviest Deimos, which puts the lowest duty rating in the group on the gate most likely to be at a busy site.

A villa gate opening six or eight times a day is comfortably inside semi intensive. A compound entrance serving twenty apartments, a workshop with deliveries through the day, or a car park gate is not. If your gate cycles constantly, tell us the traffic and we will quote against it rather than against the weight alone.

BFT Deimos AC A800 vs ARES BT A1000, 22 OMR apart

This is the comparison worth making before you buy, and no supplier makes it because it points at a dearer product.

Twenty two rial is the gap. It buys 200 kg of headroom, a soft stop, a duty class upgrade and the option of battery backup. For a gate at a busy entrance, or a heavy solid leaf, or anywhere a power cut is a real inconvenience, the ARES BT A1000 kit is the better machine and we would rather sell you the right one.

The Deimos AC A800 wins where the gate is well under 800 kg, opens a handful of times a day, is not solid infill, and mains power is not a concern. On that gate it does the job for less and the savings are real.

IP24 and dust, siting a BFT sliding gate motor in Oman

IP24 is printed on almost every listing of this motor and explained on none of them. The 4 means the casing resists splashing water from any direction. The 2 means it is protected only against solid objects above 12.5 mm. There is no dust protection in that rating at all.

On a sheltered villa gate in Muscat that is manageable. On an exposed roadside or industrial gate in Nizwa, Sohar or Duqm that takes blown sand, plan for it. Set the operator on its foundation clear of ground level so it is not standing in drift, keep the cover seal and the cable glands intact, and book a service clean rather than waiting for a fault. The 55 C upper limit is real, so give it shade where the site allows.

Supplied in the kit:

• BFT Deimos AC A800 operator, 230V, with the SHYRA F AC control unit
• 2 x Mitto B RCB04 R1 four channel remote controls
• 1 x pair of self aligning photocells, 30 m range
• 1 x Radius B LTA 230 R1 flashing light with antenna
• 1 x push button
• 4 x nylon rack, one metre each
• 1 x fixing bracket

The rack is the item to check before delivery day. Four metres of rack covers a four metre leaf and no more, because rack runs the full length of the gate leaf rather than the width of the opening. Nylon is the light duty option supplied in kits, and under a gate near 800 kg most installers move to galvanised steel. We stock both the BFT nylon rack and the BFT CVZ D571053 steel rack in one metre lengths. Whichever you use, it must be module 4 to mesh with this pinion.

Not included: rack beyond four metres, the concrete foundation and its cable ducting, a keypad or card reader, and any mains work to the gate position. Backup batteries are not an option on this motor at all. Extra transmitters are listed under BFT remotes, and spare boards and parts under BFT accessories.

Most of the work on a sliding gate is not the motor. It is a level foundation at the correct height and offset, ducting run before the concrete goes down, and rack aligned so the pinion carries the drive rather than the gate hanging on it.

On this motor the end stops deserve extra attention, because there is no slowdown to take the impact out of them. Buffered stops and a properly trued track are not optional refinements here, they are what keeps the gate quiet and the wheels alive. BFT Deimos AC A800 FAQ

Does the BFT Deimos AC A800 have a soft stop?
No. Slowdown is not fitted, so the gate reaches its end stops at full speed on every cycle. Fit buffered stops and keep the track properly aligned, because that impact is absorbed by the gate and wheels rather than the motor.

Can I add backup batteries so the gate works in a power cut?
No. This is a 230V AC motor and batteries cannot be fitted now or later. If you need the gate to open without mains power, you need a 24V BT model such as the Ares BT A1000.

What does semi intensive duty mean in practice?
It is one step below the intensive rating on the Ares range. A villa gate opening a handful of times a day is well inside it. A compound entrance, workshop or car park gate cycling constantly is not.

Is this or the ARES BT A1000 the better buy?
They are 22 OMR apart. The Ares adds 200 kg of headroom, a soft stop, intensive duty and the option of battery backup. The Deimos AC A800 is the better value on a lighter gate at a quiet entrance where mains power is not a concern.

Is four metres of rack enough?

Will IP24 cope with dust in Oman?
It gives splash resistance but no dust protection at all. Mount the operator clear of ground level, keep the seals and glands intact, and schedule a service clean on exposed or sandy sites.
