The BFT E5 BT A18 is a light duty swing gate motor kit for gates up to 100 kg and 1.8 metres wide, supplied as two matched 24V motors with the THALIA BT A80 control board. It sits at the opposite end of BFT’s swing range from the ATHOS series, built for pedestrian gates, side gates and light villa entrances rather than a heavy driveway leaf.

One thing to know before ordering. The release mechanism is reversible, so the gate can be pushed open by hand without unlocking anything. On a light gate that is normal. On a gate protecting anything valuable, it is a real security question worth asking first.

Reversible release, what it means for security on a BFT swing gate motor

Reversible means the operator does not lock the gate mechanically when closed. Someone can push the gate open by hand, motor disengaged or not, which is a normal design choice on a light gate where automation is about convenience rather than security.

If the gate is the main entrance to a compound or protects anything worth securing, ask us about a model with mechanical locking instead, such as the ATHOS range. If it is a pedestrian gate, side access or an internal gate, reversible release is rarely a problem in practice.

Absolute encoder, why the BFT E5 BT A18 keeps its position after a power cut

The E5’s limit switch is an absolute encoder, not the work time based system used on lighter or older operators. An absolute encoder always knows the gate’s exact position, even after a power cut, so the gate does not need re-homing or re-learning its limits every time the mains drops.

On a light gate that cycles often, that means fewer callouts for a gate that “forgets” where it is, which is the most common complaint on cheaper timer based systems.
