What a Somfy gate photocell does

A photocell sends an invisible beam across the opening. If a car, a person or a pet breaks the beam while the gate or door is closing, the sensor tells the control board, and the motor stops or reverses. It is the main protection against a moving gate closing on something in its path.

It does not replace the motor’s own obstacle detection. It works earlier, because it reacts before the leaf touches anything. We recommend a photocell pair on every automatic gate that opens onto a driveway or a pavement.

2 wire bus or 4 wire: how the Somfy photocell connects

Somfy lists two ways to connect the Master Pro Bitech. A 4 wire connection runs a separate pair of wires for power and for the signal. A 2 wire bus connection carries both on a single pair, which saves cable on a long run.

Which mode you use depends on the control board in your motor. We read the board, choose the mode and set it up. Do not guess, because a wrong connection leaves the photocell dead or the safety input open.

24 Vac or dc supply for a Somfy photocell

The photocell is rated for 24 V, alternating or direct. Most Somfy control boards supply that voltage to accessories, so no extra power supply is needed. A board with no 24 V accessory output would need a separate supply, and we check this before we fit.

IP54, sun and sand: placing a Somfy photocell in Oman

IP54 protects against dust and splashing water, which suits most Omani gates. Strong low sun can still dazzle a photocell receiver at certain times of day, and sand can settle on the lens.
