A standard break glass unit has one consumable, and it is the glass. Break it and someone must fit a new panel. This version replaces the glass with a spring loaded element you push. A key turn returns it to normal.

Nothing is destroyed. The same unit can be operated and reset hundreds of times. For a facilities team running a fire drill every quarter, that difference pays for itself quickly.

Why two poles matter

A single pole drops one circuit. Double pole gives you two independent switches operating together from one action.

The common pairing is simple. Pole one cuts the magnetic lock supply. Pole two feeds a sounder, a strobe, or a monitored input on the access panel so the office knows a door has been released. Some fire officers ask for double pole isolation as a minimum on access controlled escape doors.

Q: If I only use one pole, am I wasting the second? Not really. Leave the second set of contacts unwired and they cost you nothing. It is common to fit double pole units everywhere so the second circuit is available later without changing the device on the wall.

Q: Can I swap a resettable unit into the back box my old one used? Usually yes, if it was a single gang box. The resettable unit is slightly deeper than a plain break glass, so check the box depth before you buy. If the old unit was surface mounted, the supplied box replaces it directly.
