The Somfy Elixo 500 in the 3S RTS version is a sliding gate motor kit for gates up to 500 kg. The motor runs at 24V DC from a 230V mains supply, and it carries ten programmable opening speeds, ten closing speeds and five closing approach speeds. That level of adjustment is unusual at this price.

Check two things before you order. The kit includes only four metres of rack, and the handsets speak Somfy RTS, which no BFT or Nice receiver will accept.

Somfy Elixo 500 rack length: four metres is not always enough

Rack runs the full leaf length, not the opening width. The kit includes four 1 metre pieces, which covers a leaf up to 4 metres. A 6 metre leaf needs 6 metres of rack, even if the gap it closes is only 4 metres.

The Elixo range splits by weight and by motor type, and the sizes are not interchangeable.

Somfy RTS remote Oman: why BFT and Nice handsets will not pair

Somfy RTS transmits on 433.42 MHz with its own rolling code. BFT Mitto handsets use 433.92 MHz, and Nice and Came use their own coding. The radios cannot hear each other, whatever the handset looks like.

Moving an existing site to Somfy means issuing new RTS handsets. The two supplied cover a small household. A compound or staff entrance needs more, so tell us how many people use the gate.

Ten opening speeds and five approach speeds, what they change

Opening and closing speeds are set in ten steps each. A gentler setting protects a lightweight gate and quiets a gate near a bedroom window. A faster setting suits a driveway where waiting is the daily complaint.

The five approach speeds control how fast the gate moves in the last stretch before it closes. A slow approach stops the leaf meeting the post at full speed, which saves the rack, the roller and the post itself over years of use.

Safety inputs, and which photocell type you have

The Elixo accepts three photocell types: a standard transmitter and receiver pair, a BUS type and a reflex type. A reflex photocell bounces its beam off a mirror, so it needs wiring on one side of the gate only. That helps where a trench to the far post is awkward.

A safety edge strip adds protection on the leading edge of the leaf. We set the closing force and test obstacle reaction with the gate loaded and moving, never on the bench. Our Compacta A20 page explains photocell alignment, which causes most reversing complaints.

A 24V DC motor and the power cut question

A 24V DC motor can run from a battery pack in principle. Somfy does not state battery backup for this kit on the listing, so we confirm it with Somfy before promising anyone that the gate opens in an outage. Until then, treat it as a mains gate and keep the manual release key somewhere you can find it.

The Somfy Elixo 500 and 800 230V RTS control board does not fit this 3S model, which is a 24V DC motor. If your 3S needs a replacement board, send us a photo of the existing board and the motor plate, and we will confirm the right part.

Sand, salt and heat on an Omani sliding gate

IP44 handles splashing water but not standing water, so we mount the motor on a raised plinth. Blown sand is the real enemy of a sliding gate. It packs into the rack and the track, the leaf stiffens, and the motor works harder, so brush both periodically.

Coastal sites in Sohar, Sur and Salalah add salt, which corrodes rack fixings and foundation bolts. Inland at Nizwa and Duqm, summer heat is the factor. The stated range to plus 60°C is comfortable for most Omani summers.
