No. A swing gate motor and a swing gate opener are the same machine under two names. Installers say motor, and many buyers say opener or operator. Whatever you call it, you are buying a motor or a pair of motors, a control board, a set of remotes and the safety devices that open a hinged gate.

What does differ is the detail: weight and length rating, 230V or 24V, arm or ram, speed, duty and what comes in the kit.

How to choose a swing gate motor by leaf weight and length

A swing gate motor is rated for a weight and a length of each leaf, and both matter. A long leaf puts more leverage on the arm than a short one, even at the same weight, so a motor that handles 400 kg at 2 m may not handle it at 4 m.

We ask for both the weight and the length of each leaf before we recommend a motor, and we allow for wind on solid sheet leaves.

Pillar depth, hinge position and opening angle for a swing gate motor

This is where swing gate motors differ from sliding ones. An arm mounted motor needs clear depth from the hinge to the inside face of the pillar, so the arm can travel through its stroke. Too little depth limits how far the leaf opens, or forces an awkward bracket position.

230V or 24V swing gate motors: which suits your gate

A 230V motor runs straight from mains, and it suits many home gates. A 24V motor runs on a low voltage supply, and it can take a battery backup. It suits gates that open often, narrow posts and sites where power cuts are a worry. The BFT range shows the split clearly: AC models run on 230V, and BT models run on 24V with a battery backup.

A Somfy example is the 24V Ixengo L, which fits posts as narrow as 80 mm, next to the 230V Ixengo JL and JS.

Single or double swing gate: one motor or a twin kit

A double swing gate needs a motor on each leaf, and most kits are sold as a twin set with one control board. A single leaf needs one motor. For a double gate, the two leaves must meet cleanly in the middle and be fitted with stops, so that the motors push against something solid.

Locks, wind and safety on a swing gate motor

A swing leaf catches the wind like a sail, and a tall solid leaf puts a large load on the hinges and the arm. Some motors hold the leaf closed and some do not, so we add an electric lock where it is needed. Photocells stop the gate closing on a car or a person, a safety edge protects the closing edge, and a flashing lamp warns people before it moves.

Many kits include photocells and a lamp, and many do not, so we list each item in the quote.

Swing gate motor remotes: why brands do not mix

Each brand uses its own radio coding. A Somfy handset pairs only with a Somfy receiver, a CAME handset with a CAME receiver, and so on, even when the frequency looks close. If you already own remotes from one brand, that is a good reason to choose a motor from the same brand, or to budget for new handsets with the motor.

A swing gate motor runs on mains power, and a power cut leaves the gate where it stopped. Every motor has a manual release, so you can swing the leaf by hand, and we place the release where you can reach it. A 24V model with a battery backup keeps the gate working for a limited number of cycles, and we confirm that with the maker before we promise it.

Heat, sand and swing gate motors in Oman

A gate motor in Oman works in direct sun, heat and blown sand. Coastal sites add salt, which attacks pivots first. We mount each motor clear of standing water and fit sealed cable entries. Keeping the hinges greased and the pillar free of rust is the best thing you can do for the life of the motor.
